Sometimes finding space for shoe storage simply means using space you already have, knowing what products are available and being creative… “thinking outside the shoe box” if you will.

How much space do you have?

You need to have good measurements for your closet or entryway. Closet products are generally sized in 12 inch intervals as a closets are usually 24 inches deep but your entrance way can be large enough for a storage bench or small enough that it won’t even accommodate shoe storage so get good measurements.

How many shoes need to be stored? Which shoes do you wear most often and which ones are simply stored away? We usually only wear about 20% of what we own so some of your footwear will be worn often and those are the items that you need to keep readily accessible. Everything else can be stored away.

Products for shoe storage

Boxes- boxes are suitable for storing shoes that are not to be accessed frequently. Look for clear plastic boxes so you can easily identify what is in there. Make sure if you are using boxes for shoe storage that are all of the same variety and that they are made to stack together.

Shoe racks – shoe racks can be plastic coated metal, laminate, and melamine covered particle board and even real cedar. Look for shoe racks with stackable components so you can use the vertical space in your closet. Try raising the closet rod to 72 inches and then putting the shoe rack on the floor. This arrangement provides space for shoe storage and still allows enough vertical space above your shoes for hanging garments. Underbed shoe storage – some products are now made to fit underneath the bed to provide use of space that is otherwise wasted. Underbed units are made of either soft plastic or rigid plastic boxes with hinged lids. This is another shoe storage idea for those shoes that are not accessed often. If you need extra space under the bed to accommodate a storage unit then raise the bed a few inches. There are specific products available called “bed risers” that can be used to get the bed a few inches higher in order to make the horizontal surface under the bed more usable for storage. You can even go to the big box store and purchase bed casters that are adjustable to different heights and they might provide the few extra inches you need.



Think “outside the shoe box”

It is not always necessary to use a product designed for shoe storage if you want to store shoes. Other types of furniture can sometimes do just as well. I have seen metal lockers, book cases, storage baskets, and even laundry baskets used to corral those loose shoes.

Here are three ideas for shoe storage that essentially make good use of products that were designed for something else.

Do you have a big decorative clay pot? Instead of planting a plant in there and dealing with all the dirt and constant watering use it to store shoes right by the entry way.

A vertical CD holder doesn’t have to be for CD’s, some of them are great for storing your footwear.

One of the most creative shoe storage ideas I have seen is the use of an entertainment unit placed at the end of a king size bed. It is often hard to find a bench that will span the entire width of a king size bed but this unit fit perfectly and the owners used the “cubbies” for shoe storage. If also provided a perfect place to sit while donning shoes.

So if you want new and original shoe storage ideas for all of those shoes you have on the floor and not on your feet, just get creative and think outside the shoe box.

I received an unexpected e-mail through the Web site a few weeks ago offering to sell me thousands of new, name brand mismatched shoes at one dollar each. I felt this was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to populate the site, make matches with users more likely and keep thousands of shoes out of landfills. 

Around the same time that those shoes were being delivered I received another e-mail from someone else offering to sell me thousands of new, name brand mismatched shoes to me for ten cents each (if they shipped them) and free if I could pick them up.  I  realized that this was a twice-in-a-lifetime opportunity that just happened to come within weeks of the first of the offer.

Before I had a chance to make shipping arrangements for the second batch of shoes, I received yet another e-mail through the site from a shoe manufacturer asking if I was interested in taking 3,000 shoes off their hands.  It was becoming clear to me that new, mismatched shoes are an extremely common problem in stores that sell shoes – especially self-service stores and thousands of these shoes are being thrown away each year.

How do stores end up with so many mismatched shoes?  Sometimes, people open more than one pair of shoes to try them on and unintentionally put one of the shoes of each pair in the wrong box.  Some of those people come back to the store when they realize their mistake but others do not.  Perhaps more common is people with mismatched feet intentionally switching out shoes to get one in each of their sizes, leaving a pair of mismatched shoes the store cannot sell.

With most chain stores, the mismatched shoes are sent to a central location.  In some cases the chain itself sorts through the shoes and makes as many matches as possible to return to their stores and take whatever they can get for the shoes that cannot be matched.  In other cases, the chain just sells the entire batch of shoes to salvage companies, who sort through the shoes to find matches to sell at discount stores.

Mismatched shoes are worth very little to shoe stores, but are potentially worth a lot to those who normally have to buy two pairs of shoes at a time.  Until now there has not been an efficient way to match the shoes with those who need them.

OddShoeFinder.com is the first searchable Web site that matches otherwise unwanted shoes that would normally end up in a landfill with those who can use them.  It offers business opportunities to some and low-priced shoes to millions.  While it was launched for people with mismatched feet, there is no reason for users not to post their matched pairs of shoes.  It costs nothing to post shoes on the site, and there are no commissions.

OddShoeFinder.com started as a very simple site.  People registered with the site and posted their shoes and others clicked on “buy this shoe,” triggering an e-mail to the seller including the shipping address and contact information of the buyer.  Buyers and sellers decide pricing and shipping and payment methods.  Users are encouraged to give feedback on the site and enhancements have been developed based on their input.

Some users complained of the inability of to communicate with each other prior to a sale, so a messaging system was added.  If they decide to complete the sale then we recommend they use the “buy this shoe” button because it removes the shoe from the listings and helps the seller and Webmaster keep track of sales.

Realizing that many people may visit the site repeatedly to search for shoes in their size, only to find nothing new, we installed a feature that allows users to receive an e-mail each week to when someone posts shoes in their size(s).

A few users asked for a means of rating sellers and buyers such as those found on eBay and Amazon.com.  While we have not reached that point yet, OddShoeFinder.com now has a forum where people can post information about their experiences – or anything else (in good taste, of course) they want to talk about.  Many users of the site suffer or have suffered from similar health issues and we hope the forum provides a place for them to find each other for advice and comfort.

Our plan is to help the site reach critical mass by purchasing and posting mismatched new shoes so that everyone will have the opportunity to purchase an inexpensive pair or shoes, a mismatched pair or a single shoe in the perfect size.

It seems that every few months your children need new shoes and you may try to stretch your budget by fixing their current shoes or by giving them a pair a big sister or brother has discarded.  Unfortunately, either solution may not be good for the feet of the child who needs a shoe fix.  Some health issues caused by improperly fitted, worn out or hand me down shoes include plantar fasciitis, Morton’s neuroma, excessive sweating, hammertoes, corns, bunions and blisters.

Feet are critical to the overall health of the human body.  Your children have 26 bones in their feet with almost half of them located in the toes.  In addition to bones they have 19 muscles, 107 ligaments and 33 joints making their feet incredibly complex.  As an adult you know from experience what problems foot pain or injuries can cause in your day-to-day life and this is even more frustrating for a child.

One way you can reduce or eliminate the possibility of problems with your children’s feet is by inspecting their feet and shoes frequently.  A foot inspection will alert you to problems your child has not yet found painful, and a shoe inspection will help you decide whether or not you want to repair or replace them.  Following is a suggested checklist of issues to be considered.

Let’s start with the foot inspection:

1.  What is the size of the feet being inspected?  Most people have one foot larger than the rest.  If you are not sure of the size take your child to a shoe store to be sized properly.

2.  Are there any obvious defects such as blisters, fissures, bunions, corns or spots that are just plain red and irritated?

4.  Do you see any large patches of excessively dry skin?

5.  Give your child a foot massage and watch for signs of pain or cramping.

6.  Make note of any problems that necessitate a visit to your pediatrician.

Next, we’ll move on to the shoe inspection:

1.  Pay attention to the size of the shoes as compared to the current size your child wears.  It may be possible to continue wearing shoes slightly bigger than the current size but never let them wear shoes that are to small.

2.  How does the sole of the shoe look?  Was it thin to begin with or has it thinned in response to use?

3.  Is either heel loose?

4.  Ask your child to put the shoes back on and check if they have adequate toe room or places where there the shoe causes friction against their skin. 

5.  Have your child walk in the shoes so you can see their gait.

When you have finished looking at your child’s feet and shoes consider if you can repair any issues without harming the feet that wear the shoes.  If there is no toe room but the shoes otherwise fit you may be able to stretch the toe box with stretching spray and a shoe stretcher depending on the fabric of the shoes. 

If the soles of the shoe have become very flimsy or stretch easily in response to pressure then your child may develop plantar fasciitis which is a painful inflammation of the connective tissues in the arch of the foot.  If you can flex the shoes below the toe box then the shoes need to be replaced.

When the heel of your child’s shoes are too loose compared to the rest of the shoe, use a heel insert made for children.  You want to avoid having your child develop hammertoes caused by using their toes to keep the shoes from slipping off.  Calluses on the tops of the toes is a giveaway that the heels of the shoes are too lose.

If the shoes fit well but there a few spots of pressure, try using different socks.  Socks now come in a variety of thickness and weight.  Your little one may need a thicker sock to prevent pressure wear particularly if they often wear sports shoes.

If the issues with your child’s feet seem ongoing despite new and well fitting shoes, they may need an orthotic device.  Ask your pediatrician to recommend an orthopedist or podiatrist for an evaluation.  Most orthotic devices are made of plastic and help distribute body weight evenly and realign the foot.

The feet your child is born with are the feet they need to carry them throughout their life.  Paying attention to their feet can improve their overall health by eliminating leg, back and neck pain.  A child will walk the distance around the earth three or four times during their lifetime.  Don’t you want to make that journey as pain free and comfortable as possible?

However, choosing the right kind of fabric for your shoes can make it far easier to match your color more closely. If your dress is made from satin or another shiny fabric, choose satin shoes, which will have the same reflective quality as the color of the dress. If your dress is made from a matte fabric, choose shoes made from crepe or another non-shiny fabric. That will ensure that your shoes absorb more light than they reflect, resulting in a color that is closer to the color of your dress.

Make sure that you check the shoe color match under the right light. Natural and artificial light have completely different effects on color.
